COSMETICS – Analytical chemistry

Chemical and physicochemical stability studies in a climate chamber

Also often used to determine the “Period After Openness” (PAO), these studies are conducted following CIPAC guidelines. However, they can be modified upon request, by customers’ needs.

  • Validation and validation of analytical methods.

Important to establish, through laboratory studies, that the performance characteristics

of the method meet analytical requirements. Typical analytical characteristics used in method validation are precision, accuracy, LOQ, specificity linearity, etc.

  • Global and specific contaminant migration analysis for suitability of materials for contact with cosmetics.

Plastic materials are widely used in the packing and packaging of cosmetic products. Some substances can migrate from plastics to cosmetic products and be harmful to consumers ( phthalates, bis-phenols, etc.).

Our analytical chemistry laboratories can support intense daily loads and cover a wide range of ad hoc analyses, ensuring reliability, data accuracy, and speed

Main contaminants analyzed in cosmetic products:

  • Formaldehydede (HPLC-DAD)
  • Nitrosamines -NDELA N-nitrosodiethanolamine- (UPLC-MS)
  • 1,4-dioxane (GC-MS)
  • Ethylene oxide (GC-FID)
  • PCBs (GC-MS, GC-FID)
  • IPA (GC-MS, GC-FID)
  • Chlorinated solvents (GC-MS)
  • Heavy metals (ICP-EOS, ICP-MS)

Determination of the titer of functional ingredients

  • Preservatives (Phenols, thiazolinones, formaldehyde cessors, organic acids, ethylhexyl-glycerin, etc.).
  • Vitamins (D-Panthenol, ascorbic acid, B-group vitamins, etc.)
  • Active ingredients
  • Organic filters (OMCX, Avobenzone, Ethylhexyl-triazone, PABA, etc.)
  • Allergens and aromatic substances

Frequent Analyses and Physicochemical Controls

  • Viscosity
  • Refractive index
  • Density
  • Drop Point
  • Flash Point
  • Melting point
  • DLS (determination of average particle diameter)
  • Karl Fisher (water content)
  • Iodine index
  • Saponification number of oils and fats
  • Acidity number
