Legionellosis in Italy and Europe

Legionnaires’ disease has become a new topic of interest due to various news events involving it, not only in Italy, but also in the rest of Europe.

“The new interventions come after the so-called ‘dead arms’ were removed, i.e. all the pipes, including taps, where the water stagnates and the bacteria proliferates” (10 October 2022)

“Prosecutor’s office investigates four cases of legionnaires’ disease at the spa” (12 October 2022)

As can be seen from the headlines, Legionella spp. issues are present in the national headlines.

According to data provided by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), 8372 cases of legionellosis were reported in 27 European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries in 2020. There is considerable heterogeneity among EU/EEA countries with reporting rates ranging from less than 0.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 5.7 reported in Slovenia. France, Germany, Italy and Spain together record 72% of the cases notified in 2020, although their combined population represents only about 50% of the EU/EEA population.
